There are two types of termites that are of economic importance:
Subterranean and Drywood. Although these two types of termites are
very similar in appearance, the places that they live and the appropriate
control measures for them are very different.
Subterranean termites make their homes in the ground. Travelling
through the soil and by building mud tubes, they gain access to
unprotected structures and cause the damage that all building owners
fear.
Drywood termites live entirely inside of the wood that they feed
upon. Once of the most characteristic signs of Drywood termites
is the "frass" or pellets that they eject from the wood on which
they feed. These pellets are small, hard, cylindrical bits of fecal
matter. Large accumulations of these pellets can indicate an long
standing or significant infestation of Drywood termites.
